Revised Language Certificate

As of the certifying exam in May 2017 the American Board of Periodontology (ABP) has revised the language on new certificates to indicate that the periodontist is certified in periodontology and dental implant surgery. The board elected to make this revision based on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) standards for Advanced Education Programs in Periodontics (AEPP) mandate that dental implant surgery is taught to in-depth knowledge and clinical competency, the highest levels of advanced dental education. As the field of implant dentistry progressed over the years, CODA gradually enhanced the dental implant surgery standards to a required competency for all AEPP as of 2003. The Board has established the following for granting a certificate with the revised language:

  1. Diplomates who earned their certification in 2003 or later can apply to the Board directly for a revised certificate. The applicant must be an active Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in good standing with certification that is current.

  2. Diplomates who earned their certification prior to 2003 and wish to obtain a certificate with revised language can apply to the Board under an alternative path to assure the board that the applicant has been involved in dental implant surgery. The applicant must be an active Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in good standing with certification that is current. A 50-point system based on dental implant surgery activities has been established. The ABP recognizes that there may be a variety of activities in which the Diplomate has been involved. The 50-point total can be achieved by submitting to the Board as follows:

a. A surgical log of dental implant surgical procedures. 50 cases REQUIRED. 25 Points.
NOTE: Surgical logs in dental implant surgery submitted to the board must be current within 5 years of the date of submission by the applicant.

b. The remainder of the 50-point total may be submitted with a combination of any of the activities listed below. It is strongly encouraged that applicants submit any and all activities that apply so the board has an additional record of these activities, however a minimum total of 50 points is required.

i.    Publications in the peer reviewed, citable dental implant surgery literature (i.e. articles, textbook contributions, workshop and consensus conference publications). 1 point for contributing author, 5 points for primary author. Maximum 25 points).
NOTE: Publication citations submitted as supporting qualifications must be current within 15 years of submission.

ii.    Lectures/workshops/seminars in dental implant surgery presented in a CODA accredited dental or advanced dental education program or presentations given that comply with a CE granting authority (either state dental boards or ADA CERP). 1 point per presentation. Maximum 25 points.
NOTE: Lecture presentations submitted to the board as supporting qualifications must be current within 15 years of the date of submission.

iii.    Continuing education units earned from a CE granting authority (either state dental boards or ADA CERP) 1 point per credit hour granted. Maximum 25 points.
NOTE: CE units in dental implant surgery submitted to the board must be current within 5 years of the date of submission by the applicant.

Application for a certificate with revised language will incur a fee of $250US. Supporting documentation of qualifications in the application will not be accepted as credit toward a revised certificate achieved earlier than the time frames outlined above. Diplomates applying for the new certificate will not be accepted by the Board after September 30, 2020. Additionally, verification of the above requirements is subject to random auditing by the ABP.
