2012 Diplomate Annual Registration forms were mailed to Active Diplomates in October 2011.  2012 Annual Registration and fee were due by January 1, 2012.  It is Board policy that Diplomates who do not submit 2012 Annual Registration and fee by January 15, 2012 incur a $100 late fee.  Diplomates who do not submit the 2012 Annual Registration and fee by March 31, 2012 will be placed on Inactive Status. Registration can be completed on-line or via u.s. postal mail.  If you have not received an annual registration form please contact the Board staff at 410-647-1324.

EXAM FORMAT CHANGE

The Board will be introducing a new format for the Oral Exam beginning with the May 2012 exam. The exam will continue to include a total of six (6), thirty (30) minute clinical protocols. Five of the six protocols will consist of a single case or procedure. Each will be graded in six skills: Diagnosis; Etiology; Prognosis; Treatment Plan; Therapy and Evaluation of Therapy; and Maintenance. The sixth protocol will consist of three (3) ten (10) minute vignette protocols. These may include such topics as medical management, medical emergencies, periodontal or oral medicine, perio-pathology, post-op complications and management of failures. Each ten minute vignette protocol will be graded on two skills: Diagnosis and Therapy. This sixth protocol will therefore have six grades from each Examiner, which is the same number of grades as the other five protocols. Since the six grades for the vignette protocols are only in Diagnosis and therapy categories these two categories will be slightly more weighted than the other four grading categories for overall score.

2012 ABP Qualifying Examination

Offered on two dates:  August 27 and August 28

Application deadline June 15, 2012

Candidates are encouraged to download and review the ABP Guidelines for Certification.  Testing center scheduling begins June 11 for applicants approved by the ABP

Candidates who successfully complete the 2011 Qualifying Examination will be considered Eligible for two years to apply for the Oral Examination.  During this time the Oral Examination process must be completed unless an eligibility extension is granted.  Candidates who received three (3) years eligibility prior to 2010 must apply and successfully complete the Oral Examination within three (3) years from the year the Qualifying Examination was successfully completed unless an extension is granted.

Requests for Eligibility Extension

Requests for eligibility extension may be made in writing to the Board office. Request must be received by October 31st of the year prior to eligibility expiration; i.e. If eligibility expires in 2013, extension request must be received by October 31, 2012.

The Executive Director can approve extensions for qualified candidates without Board action.

Questionable requests will be considered by the Board.

Requests will be granted only when in the Board's judgement the candidate was prevented from taking the Oral Examination by extenuating circumstances.

A maximum of one request will be considered.

At any time candidates may restart the eligibility period by retaking and passing the Qualifying Examination.
