The American Board of Periodontology is the nationally recognized specialty board for periodontics, providing certification in periodontology and dental implant surgery.
Board Overview
The eleven member Board of Directors governs the work of the American Board of Periodontology. Officers are elected by the Board and Directors are elected by the Active and Life Active members of the American Academy of Periodontology in a national annual election.

In 1949, the American Dental Association House of Delegates recognized the ABP as the official specialty board for the certification of periodontists, making it the second recognized certifying board in the nation.

Today, with the assistance of over fifty examiners, the Board is able to examine close to 200 candidates a year.
